Sometimes a book sneaks up on you with its quietness, and that is exactly what My Stubborn Heart by Becky Wade does.

Kate Donovan travels to a small town in Pennsylvania with her grandmother to help restore the family's old home, and what she finds there is more than crumbling walls in need of fixing. Matt, the renovator hired for the job, is a man who has mastered the art of keeping himself functional while quietly sidestepping the deeper healing his heart actually needs. The story unfolds gently around the renovation, a delightful group of retirees who practically run the show, and two people figuring out how to let someone in.

What stood out most here is how Becky Wade handles faith. It never feels like a sermon dropped into the middle of a romance. Instead it feels woven into the fabric of everyday life the way faith genuinely operates for a lot of believers. People pray, go to church, feel God nudging them, and then go right back to awkward conversations and weekend plans and figuring out what to do with a leaky roof. That texture felt honest and grounding rather than performative, and it gave the whole story a warmth that is hard to manufacture.

Matt's arc is where the book really earns its four stars. Watching him move from someone who functions around his pain to someone willing to actually be healed is a quiet, slow, genuinely moving thing to witness. Kate's patience with him reads as strength rather than passivity, which is a balance a lot of romance novels miss. The found family of retirees is an absolute bonus and honestly could carry their own spinoff. If you are looking for a gentle, faith-forward small town romance that takes its characters seriously, this one is well worth your time.
