Sometimes all it takes is the most heartbreaking circumstances imaginable to put two people back in the same orbit, and Denise Hunter builds an entire story on that devastating foundation.

When Laurel and Gavin lose their closest friends in a tragedy, they find themselves named as guardians to a toddler who needs both of them. The problem is that Laurel and Gavin are divorced, and being in the same room is the last thing either of them wants. What follows is the story of two people who have to set aside everything that broke them apart and figure out how to show up for a grieving child, and maybe for each other.

This is a heavier read than you might expect going in. Hunter doesn't shy away from the grief layered into this story, including a loss in Laurel and Gavin's own past that quietly explains so much about why their marriage fell apart. It could easily tip into melodrama but it doesn't. She earns the emotional weight by grounding it in small, honest moments where you can see these two people slowly remembering what they meant to each other.

If you are already a Denise Hunter reader, Harvest Moon is a strong entry and delivers exactly the kind of warmth tucked inside heartbreak that she does so well. And while the Riverbend series works as standalone reads, the reviewer's note here is worth taking seriously: Gavin's arc lands with a lot more force if you have the context from earlier books. Either way, this one is worth your time.

Not a 5-star read for me, but a rating is just one reader's experience. If the tropes above are your thing, this could be exactly what you're looking for. I'd rather share it than gatekeep it.
