Sometimes the most emotionally loaded place a person can return to is the town that already knows all their secrets, and India Tungate's debut leans right into that tension.

Raine, Raine, Run Away follows Raine as she comes back to her small Kentucky hometown after a decade away, only to find herself face to face with the man she once left behind. He's now a single dad overseeing the renovation of her grandparents' farmhouse, which means the universe has very deliberately put these two in each other's orbit again. A dual timeline structure carries us through the warmth of how they first fell for each other alongside the messier, harder work of figuring out what went wrong.

I loved a lot of what Tungate does here. Ryland is the kind of MMC you want to root for, steady and thoughtful without being boring, and the single dad layer adds real emotional weight to what's already a tender reconnection story. The small town setting is genuinely cozy without feeling like a backdrop prop, and Tungate handles grief and difficult family dynamics with a care that keeps the heavier threads from swamping the sweetness of the romance.

That said, this one landed at three and a half stars for me rather than higher, mostly because the middle section lost some momentum and a few beats of the central conflict felt like familiar territory. Neither of those are dealbreakers, especially for a debut, but they kept me from being fully swept away. Still, as a first novel this is a really promising start, and I am absolutely going to be watching what Tungate does next.

Not a 5-star read for me, but a rating is just one reader's experience. If the tropes above are your thing, this could be exactly what you're looking for. I'd rather share it than gatekeep it.
